Our Aircraft

The RAF Sentinel Programme was a significant component of the United Kingdom's airborne intelligence, surveillance, target acquisition, and reconnaissance (ISTAR) capabilities. The programme centered around the Sentinel R1 aircraft, which was derived from the Bombardier Global Express business jet and equipped with an advanced radar system. JSR has acquired all Five (5) Sentinel Aircraft in partnership with Raytheon-Collins.

Aircraft and Equipment

• Sentinel R1: The core of the programme was the Sentinel R1 aircraft. It was modified with sophisticated radar and communication systems to fulfill its surveillance and reconnaissance roles.

• Airborne Stand-Off Radar (ASTOR): The Sentinel R1 was equipped with the ASTOR system, which provided wide-area ground surveillance and battlefield management capabilities. This radar system could detect, track, and classify objects over a large area, providing real-time intelligence to commanders on the ground.

• Wide-Area Surveillance: The primary function of the Sentinel R1 was to provide wide-area ground surveillance. This capability was essential for monitoring battlefield environments, identifying enemy movements, and supporting ground operations.

• Intelligence Gathering: The Sentinel R1 could gather and relay high-resolution imagery and data, contributing to the overall intelligence picture. This information was crucial for operational planning and decision-making.

• Support for Military Operations: The aircraft played a critical role in various military operations, including Operation Herrick in Afghanistan and Operation Shader in Iraq and Syria. It provided vital information that enhanced situational awareness and mission effectiveness.

Operational History

• Afghanistan (Operation Herrick): The Sentinel R1 was deployed to Afghanistan to support British and coalition forces. Its surveillance capabilities were instrumental in monitoring insurgent activities and protecting troops on the ground.

• Libya (Operation Ellamy): During the 2011 intervention in Libya, the Sentinel R1 provided valuable intelligence and reconnaissance, supporting NATO operations.

• Middle East (Operation Shader): The aircraft also contributed to the fight against ISIS in Iraq and Syria, providing real-time intelligence that aided in targeting and operational planning.
